Grooming your pet.

Not everyone can afford a professional groomer, but everyone can do some grooming at home. Perhaps the most beneficial home grooming is giving your pet a bath. If you have an indoor pooch, then you probably want to keep him smelling fresh. Even an outdoor dog needs a bath to protect his coat and keep him feeling good. Before you grab your bathing supplies, there are a few things you need to consider in your preplanning.

First, consider the size of your dog. If you have a miniature breed, then giving him a bath in a bathtub may be a little over the top. On the other hand, you can’t fit a German shepherd in the kitchen sink. You want your pet to be as comfortable as possible during bathing, so that he will be more willing to participate next time. Make sure he has adequate room during the process, but also keep your sanity in mind. You need to be able to hold him (if necessary) while giving the bath. If you take your pooch outside to bathe in the yard with a water hose, keep the water temperature and outside temperature in mind. The last thing you want is a sick or extremely uncomfortable dog.

The second thing you should think about is the breed of your dog. No, a Bulldog doesn’t bathe differently than a Hound, but the pre-bathing ritual may be a little different. In other words, the breed will affect the coat. For instance, if you have a long haired dog, then it’s a good idea to brush his coat before the bath to help control the tangles. You may also need to use a detangling shampoo on long or thick coats. If your pet is susceptible to dry, itchy skin, then get shampoo that does not strip the coat. It may more than one try before you find the products that are right for your animal.

Lastly, keep your pooch’s temperament in mind. Some dogs will gladly sit through an entire grooming session, while others won’t get near the water. If you need extra space or extra help with your dog, then make sure you have those things secured before you start the bath. If you’re giving your pooch a bath in the bathtub, then consider placing a non-slip rubber mat in the bottom of the tub. Often, pets are more scared of sliding around than they are of the water, and a non-slip mat will help.

Bathing a dog is not the most difficult task in the world. Once you try it a couple of times, then you’ll probably be able to bathe your dog quickly and easily. Before you grab a water bucket and soap, there are a few things you should think about. First, consider the size of your dog. Second, consider the qualities of your dog’s hair and coat. Last, keep your dog’s temperament in mind. A good bathing experience can mean easier baths in the future.
