Important Things to Do Before Traveling with Your Dog.

Taking your pet on holiday can give both you and your pet many fantastic experiences. Dogs are dependent on their owner and need lots of attention when they go abroad and many things should be kept in mind before going on your vacation. One of the most important things is making sure your pet is in good health for traveling. Knowing your pet has had all his vaccines can make your trip a far less stressful one, since many pet friendly places need you to show that your pet has had its vaccination boosters. Booking your destination prior to going on holiday is also an important step. It means that you can make sure there are plenty of pet friendly places to visit.

To find out if the place you are staying at is pet friendly, simply ask. If you don't, it may leave you later disappointed, as you find out the company does not accept animals. The majority of motels refuse pets, and places that do accept household animals, place restrictions on what kind, and size of pet is permitted. A lot of motels, including doggy-motels, turn away dogs like American bulldogs, and Bull terriers. These restrictions put in place to make sure that people's pets don't get attacked by aggressive dogs.

Airline approved crates should be brought along, in every case, when travelling by airplane. Crates provide your pet with comfort and safety, and are a fine means of transporting the animal from one place to another. It must be kept in mind that planes generally require dogs to be kept in their crates throughout the flight although a few airplane companies permit a small dog, or puppy to be brought aboard out of its crate as long as it has a separate seat next to its owner pre-booked. A carrying case like a Sherpa bag is usually required too. Again, the best thing to do is to check before hand, what the rules are for taking your pet aboard any airplane. When you need to carry your pet by crate, check that the crate is well aired and strong enough. With most airlines, it must be an approved make of crate. A comfortable dog mat, some toys and a water are also much needed items that should be brought along with the crate. Make sure that the mat is leak proof too so that, should your dog need to relieve itself. The fluids shouldn't leak through the mat. Attach to the crate clear labels that the box has a living animal in it. Another label states the name of the dog and time and date when it last had water and relief. Also remember that certificates will be needed for air travel.

All cities in the USA, and in most other countries such as those in Europe require that you have identification on the crate, so that your dog can be returned to the correct destination should it be separated from its owner, during any part of the vacation. Having a microchip inserted into your pet is the best procedure to have done. This way there is always some form of identification about the dog. A strong and sturdy dog collar is a very good idea to purchase too, as it will prevent your pet from escaping.

Before going on holiday, the main thing to check is that your dog's vaccines are up to date. Almost all motels and airlines have this as a necessary requirement. Also important, is to have some form of identification on the dog at all times. And before doing anything else, always make sure to plan your vacation in advance, so that you know for sure that your dog can be brought on holiday with you and that there will be many activities that you can both do. If all this is carried out, you will experience some fantastic moments with your dog that will become long-lasting memories.

Another useful tip is to have a Check List stored on your computer that you can print out for each trip. It will contain all the small items you have needed in the past. Your list may change from trip to trip, but at least you will not forget things, like a can opener and large spoon for the canned dog food! It also helps remind you what things you have to pack, when returning home.
